Which language says the most, fastest?
A relative spoken information-rate study of Spanish, Portuguese, French, Russian and Armenian.

The answer
How much meaning each language delivers per minute of speech, compared with Spanish (1.00), using measured speech rates:
- French, ~1.22. It needs slightly more words than Spanish, but they are much shorter (1.5 syllables per word against 2.0) and spoken fast.
- Armenian, ~1.02. A tie with Spanish: the fewest words for the same meaning (24% fewer), at a moderate speed.
- Spanish, 1.00. The reference.
- Russian, ~0.89. Compact (21% fewer words), but the slowest speech of the five.
- Portuguese, ~0.85. About as wordy as Spanish, spoken ~19% slower.
How it works
- Words needed. I matched 162 passages with the same meaning in all five languages: 125 translated from five unrelated source languages, and 37 human-translated sections of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and Mark 1-6.
- Speed. Words per minute, measured from audio narrations of Mark 1-6 in each language.
- Index. Spanish's speaking time divided by each language's. Above 1.00 means the same meaning is said faster than in Spanish.
- Cross-check. Simply timing the identical narrations gives nearly the same order. Only Armenian moves, to below Spanish.
Limitations
- One narrator per language, reading scripture. The speeds are a deliberate narration pace, not conversation.
- The 125 passages were machine-translated. An audit of 75 pairs found no systematic padding.
- Armenian and Spanish are too close to call.
- This is a relative index for these five languages, not bits per second.
